British couple detained in Iran speak to family for first time

4 godzin temu

A British couple detained in Iran for seven months have spoken to their family for the first time since their arrest, with their son describing an emotional eight-minute phone call. Lindsay and Craig Foreman from East Sussex are "holding strong" despite being held in separate prisons on espionage charges they deny.

The couple were detained in January whilst on a motorcycle tour around the world and later charged with espionage. Their son Joe Bennett from Folkestone, Kent, told the BBC about his first direct contact with his mother since their arrest.

Family reunion brings tears and laughter

"We laughed, we cried, and for a few brief moments, it felt like the weight of the past seven months lifted," Bennett said. He described his parents as "resilient" and "positive", adding that "somehow, they're still smiling" despite their ordeal.

The couple are being held in different prisons and have access to basic resources, according to Bennett. However, British officials who saw his father reported that he was "dishevelled and had lost a lot of weight".

Prison conditions take physical toll

Bennett also told BBC Radio Kent that his mother is not walking well due to prison conditions. The separation of the couple adds to the challenges they face whilst detained in Iran.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises British and British-Iranian nationals not to travel to Iran due to the significant risk of detention. The warning reflects ongoing tensions between Britain and the Middle Eastern country.

Government provides consular support

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are deeply concerned by reports that two British nationals have been charged with espionage in Iran. We continue to raise this case directly with the Iranian authorities."

The Government confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the couple and remains in close contact with their family members. The case highlights the risks faced by British nationals travelling in certain regions.
